Shining a Light on Wellbeing
July 8, 2025

Valley View was recently featured in a ground-breaking study.
Over the past year, Valley View partnered with the Penn State University College of Engineering in a pioneering study exploring how lighting affects resident wellbeing. The recently published findings reveal that vertical illumination—the light we see directly in our line of vision—plays a powerful role in enhancing mood and behavior.
During their time onsite, researchers noted that residents were already in good spirits. Yet, as lighting levels were adjusted, team members observed and reported improvements in both resident mood and behavior. The team also reported feeling more energized and alert throughout their day—proving that the right lighting benefits everyone.
Most recently, Penn State researchers returned to assess the lighting in our newly renovated Chapel Way neighborhood. Their findings confirmed that Valley View is “lighting the way.” Our design aligns with their recommendations for older adult environments, supporting cognition, mood, and overall wellbeing.
We’re proud to have partnered with Penn State in their research-creating brighter, healthier spaces for all who live and work at Valley View.
